The first varsity football game of the 2017 season is in the books.  Although it was not a flawless game the Crusaders showcased an impressive performance on both ends of the field. The Concordia Mustangs of Omaha were held to only seven points while the Crusaders delivered a staggering 31 points. The game had a slow start and did not see any points until a Crusader field goal near the end of the first half. When the second half came, so did the Crusaders offense with two early touchdowns. One of these an impressive run by Joe Dworak and the other a miraculous catch and run by Reid Houchin. After two more Crusader touchdowns and a two-point conversion the Mustangs were finally able to score but it was already too late in the game for a comeback. The Crusaders grabbed the win and begin what looks to be a promising season. Coach Kurt Earl voiced this concern the day before the game. “We have a lot of players who will be playing a lot of varsity this year who have little to no varsity experience. The development of these players will be crucial.” It will take time to know how these young players adapt to the varsity playing time. If they do it will mean future success for the Crusaders in this season and seasons to come. Coach Earl was optimistic concerning the offensive line which lost multiple seniors last year. He feels that the new linemen have “tremendous potential.” Coach Earl also hopes for unity in the worship of God for his players no matter what the score board looks like. Fortunately for the Crusader coaches, players and fans the scoreboard looked pretty good last Friday.
