November 16 was a special day for Mrs. Farup’s 8th grade science students. After learning many things about the cosmos and the universe throughout the earlier half of the semester, the class was treated to a special guest. Dennis Smith came in on Thursday afternoon and spoke to the class for about an hour and a half.

Smith, the great uncle of one of the 8th grade students, was directly involved in the design of the Hubble Telescope. Although he was only involved in designing a few parts of the telescope, he still demonstrated an extensive knowledge of the telescope’s history and many of the discoveries and photos that the telescope has made.

Dennis Smith was an engineer at Boeing prior to his work for NASA. Smith’s specific engineering skills were the reason NASA recruited him to be a part of the Hubble telescope team. Smith showed the students some of the many images that the Telescope has captured, and even revealed some more recent discoveries that the telescope has made. Smith also encouraged the students to pursue a career in science and to make many of their own discoveries.
